Call for Submissions: International Criminal Law Facing New Challenges

This call aims to explore evolving issues in international criminal law: corporate criminal responsibility, environmental crimes, the impact of new technologies on the discipline, the role of international criminal justice in protecting vulnerable categories and in post conflict reconciliation. Possible topics include but are not limited to

  • International criminal responsibility of (multinational) corporations;
  • Crimes against the environment and international criminal law, with a focus on the intentional destruction of the environment during warfare and the crime of ecocide;
  • The impact of new technologies on international criminal law, with a focus on investigations and social media, the digitalisation of evidence, open-source investigations, accountability of intelligent machines and remote commanders;
  • International criminal law and the protection of vulnerable categories: sexual and gender-based crimes, children’s participation in hostilities, and the 70 years of the 1951 Geneva Refugee Convention;
  • Transitional justice, with the role of international criminal justice in post-conflict countries.

Submission Guidelines 

  • Proposed contributions should be sent to intllaw.blog@gmail.com accompanied by a short bio or CV of the Author(s). The Coordinating Board will review the contributions on a rolling basis, as to start the publications in May 2021.
  • Submissions should be the original and unpublished work of the contributor.
  • Authors are advised to keep their contributions concise and precise: to meet the format of the blog, these should be between 1200 and 2000 words.
  • All the relevant sources should be hyperlinked within the text, or cited in footnotes (OSCOLA standards apply).
  • Co-authorship is allowed.
  • All selected papers will be posted on the blog according to the schedule established by the Coordinating Board. They will constitute the basis for a cycle of thematic academic webinars and roundtables. Moreover, the Board is planning to collect them in a special dossier.

About us

International Law Blog was established in 2014 by a group of doctoral students whose paths first crossed at Middlesex University of London. The blog hosts peer-reviewed scholarly contributions on a variety of topics in the areas of International, Transnational, European and Comparative law. An International Law Blog is now an established reality in the field. The contributions published on the blog are read by over 5000 visitors every month, and they are regularly cited in academic articles, policy papers and judgments of international courts. The team of International Law Blog is composed of: Stefano Marinelli, Giulia Pecorella, Elena Maculan, Josepha Close, Elena Borsacchi.

The Association of Young International Criminal Lawyers was established in January 2021 by a group of young colleagues and friends working in different jurisdictions all around the world. The Association aspires to provide a platform for open discourse about international law, while facilitating connection and growth for young professionals and academicians working in this field. As a non-profit organisation, YICL aims to promote studies, initiatives and research in the field of international criminal law, international humanitarian law, international human rights law and, more generally, criminal law and public international law. The team of AYICL is composed of: Gustavo Minervini, Georgina Bonacera and Shireen Priya Meghe.
